Billionaire Philanthropist Wallis Annenberg Dies at 86

Wallis Annenberg, an American Philanthropist, died on Monday at the age of 86. She has supported the arts, science, education, and animal care for almost over a decade in Los Angeles. The family of the philanthropist made a statement in an interview that Annenberg was suffering from lung cancer.

The statement indicates that Wallis transitioned peacefully and comfortably this morning and is ready for her new adventure. They added that her body may have been beaten by the cancer, but her spirit never gave that; her wisdom was special, and they will hold it forever in their hearts.

The Annenberg name was adorned across Los Angeles, which also includes the Wallis Annenberg Building at the California Science Centre, the Wallis Annenberg GenSpace senior centre and the Wallis Annenberg Centre for the Performing Arts.

On the freeway of Los Angeles, the world’s biggest bridge for the animals on the move, called The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, will be open.

According to the sources, her 16-year occupation of her as president and chief executive of Annenberg Foundation, that’s a non-profit organisation, donated about $1.5 billion among the thousands of organisations in Southern California.

When Wallis Annenberg was leading the foundation then its philanthropic scope was increased and went beyond media, arts, and science, and it started to involve animal welfare, conservation of the environment, and healthcare sectors.

Walter Annenberg was the organiser of the foundation after selling his publishing empire, including TV Guide and other publications, in 1989 to Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. He was the father of Wallis Annenberg and died in 2002.

Wallis was also a longtime board member of LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art and LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). She also donated $10 million to endow its director position in 2002.

The LACMA Chief Executive, Michael Govan, talked about Wallis that she was the blessing of the Los Angeles community, not just because of her philanthropy, but also her guidance to improve the community also matters. Michael Govan filled the endowed position of Chief Executive in 2006.

She was born in Philadelphia, and after marrying Seth Weingarten, she moved to LA in the early 1970s. Seth and Wallis parted their ways in 1975.

She received the National Humanities Model Award from President Joe Biden for her philanthropic services in 2022. She is survived by her four children and five grandchildren.
